Rio Ferdinand defended Cristiano Ronaldo's move to Saudi Arabia

In a surprising turn of events, Cristiano Ronaldo announced his transfer to Al-Hilal FC, a Saudi Arabian club, in December 2023. The move shocked many fans and pundits, who questioned the motivation and legacy of the Portuguese superstar. However, one of his former teammates and friends, Rio Ferdinand, came to his defense in a blog post.

Ferdinand, who played with Ronaldo at Manchester United from 2003 to 2009, wrote that he understood and respected Ronaldo's decision to join Al-Hilal. He argued that Ronaldo had nothing left to prove in Europe, having won every major trophy and individual award possible. He also claimed that Ronaldo was not motivated by money but by a desire to challenge himself in a different environment and culture.

Ferdinand wrote: "I know Cristiano better than most people. He is not a greedy or selfish person. He is a winner and a competitor. He loves football, and he loves to test himself. He has achieved everything he could in Europe, and he wanted to try something new. He is not going to Saudi Arabia for a holiday or retirement. He is going there to win and to make history."

Ferdinand also praised Ronaldo's humanitarian work and his contribution to the development of football in Saudi Arabia. He said that Ronaldo was an inspiration and a role model for many young players and fans in the region. He also pointed out that Ronaldo had donated a large portion of his salary to various charities and causes in Saudi Arabia and around the world.

Ferdinand concluded: "Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the greatest players of all time. He has nothing to be ashamed of or apologize for. He has made his own choices and followed his own path. He has always been loyal to his friends and family, and I am proud to call him my friend. I support him and I wish him all the best in his new adventure."
